This is a list of organizations that mean a lot to me, and which I support with my money or my time. Please consider lending them your support, or let this list inspire you to write one of your own!

THE WEIR RIVER WATERSHED ASSOCIATION http://www.weirriver.org/
This organization oversees the Weir River Estuary, a state-designated Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) in Hull, Massachusetts.
I myself live on the banks of the Outer Estuary. I wonder; does this make me an endangered species?

THE HULL LAND CONSERVATION TRUST http://www.hulllandconservationtrust.org/
The importance of conservation is something I was very fortunate to learn in childhood. The HLCT is devoted to protecting land in Hull, Massachusetts, including a beautiful small woods not far from the ocean. Isn't our world incredible?

HULLWIND.ORG http://www.hullwind.org/
What's better than having a windmill to reduce energy costs and save the environment? Answer: Having two. The town of Hull has been absolutely visionary in the building of two windmills that save Hull's residents hundreds of thousands of dollars each year and make us pioneers in renewable energy. Besides, windmills are so loveable. I wrote "Millie's Waltz" as a tribute to graceful "Millie," a.k.a. Hull Wind II.

THE HULL LIFESAVING MUSEUM http://www.lifesavingmuseum.org/
The Hull Lifesaving Museum preserves the legacy of the many brave men and women who risked their lives to save shipwreck victims in the Boston Harbor area. It also honors the memory of Joshua James, considered the world's greatest lifesaver and father of the modern U.S. Coast Guard. Visit the museum or their website to rekindle your own courage and compassion.

FRIENDS of the PARAGON CAROUSEL http://www.paragoncarousel.com/
The last remaining attraction of Hull's famous amusement park, Paragon Park, is its carousel. While Paragon Park closed in the 1980s, this beautiful ride has been lovingly restored and is still a favorite with tourists. One night they even played my music!

THE HULL PERFORMING ARTS http://www.hullperformingarts.org/
The community theatre of Hull, Massachusetts invites you to attend its outstanding productions and gratefully accepts donations. Become a patron of the arts!

PBS http://www.pbs.org/
I have been enjoying the fine quality programming of the Public Broadcasting Service for as long as I can remember. PBS is truly television at its finest.

NPR http://www.npr.org/
Being a huge fan of radio, NPR is pre-set station Number One on my car radio. I am continually amazed by the fascinating and entertaining programs they offer.

FATHER BILL'S http://www.fatherbillsmainspring.org/
This homeless shelter's kitchen is a wonderful place to donate  time on Thanksgiving Day if you live in the South Boston area, and volunteers are welcome year-round.

THE WOMEN'S LUNCH PLACE http://www.womenslunchplace.org/
I can't think of a better Mother's Day gift than a card from this organization, which informs the recipient that a donation was made in their honor so that a woman in need could enjoy a lovely meal. Cards feature artwork made by women at this daytime refuge and can be obtained by contacting the organization in advance.

THE ANN RICHARDS SCHOOL for YOUNG WOMEN LEADERS http://www.annrichardsschool.org/
I had the honor of meeting Ann Richards when I lived in Texas. Her beauty and graciousness were matched only by her intelligence, her practicality, and her determination to succeed, whether in the 1990 Texas gubernatorial race or in her own struggle with the disease of alcoholism. Her memory is kept alive through this organization that benefits and inspires young women.

THE FRESH AIR FUND http://www.freshair.org/
My father, a poor boy from Brooklyn, spent his summers in New Hampshire thanks to this wonderful children's non-profit. Today I proudly donate to the organization that gave him so many happy memories.

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION to PROTECT CHILDREN http://www.protect.org/
As a pro-child/anti-crime organization, the National Association to Protect Children seeks to save children from physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. This is a subject very close to my heart, and I am a strong supporter of the NAPC's efforts.

THE LITTLE SHELTER http://www.littleshelter.com/
Located in Long Island, New York, you can make a donation to this organization in memory of a deceased companion animal and a card will be sent to the bereaved family. This very thoughtful expression of sympathy turns tragedy into hope by helping animals in need.

BLACK BEAUTY RANCH http://blackbeautyranch.org/
Founded by the late Cleveland Amory, a writer from a privileged New England background who turned his resources towards compassionate rather than worldly goals, Black Beauty Ranch is America's largest and most diverse animal sanctuary. Nearly 1,300 acres in Murchison, Texas are home to a magnificent array of animals, both domestic and exotic, who have either been discarded or have been rescued from slaughterhouses, zoos, or trophy hunting ranches. Other animal residents, endangered or abused, now live in safety at the ranch. The sanctuary is also the subject of Amory's last book, Ranch of Dreams

THE NEW ENGLAND WILDLIFE CENTER http://www.newildlife.com/
This environmental preservation site and rehabilitation facility provides habitat and treatment for sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals. Blessed with a knowledgeable and caring staff, the center cares compassionately for the great variety of creatures in our midst.

KIVA http://www.kiva.org/
The creator of the concept upon which this organization was modeled--microfinancing--won a Nobel Peace Prize, but you don't have to be an economic genius to realize that this is a good idea. A small loan made to someone in a developing country can turn the destitute into thriving entrepreneurs, and makes worldwide prosperity an imaginable goal.

THE AMERICAN RED CROSS http://www.redcross.org/
This organization offers so many opportunities to do good for others: donate blood or platelets, get training in First Aid, Water Safety, or Disaster Preparedness.

THE NATIONAL MARROW DONOR PROGRAM http://www.marrow.org/
Thousands of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases depend upon marrow donation to save their lives. By joining the registry, you enter the NMDP's database as a possible match. Contrary to popular belief, if you are chosen as a donor, chances are the donation would not involve surgery and can be performed quickly and safely. My grandfather died of leukemia, so this program is one with which I am especially proud to be involved.

THE PEACE ABBEY http://www.peaceabbey.org/
Dedicated to nonviolence, peacemaking, and cruelty-free living, The Peace Abbey offers a variety of resources to further these aims. Learn more about them on their website.

THE NATIONAL IMMIGRATION FORUM http://www.immigrationforum.org/
Promoting  policies that reflect America's proud history as a nation of immigrants and creating opportunities for those who choose to live in this nation, the National Immigration Forum supports policies that value immigrants and their outstanding contribution to the United States. As a descendant of immigrants who came to America in the early 1900s, I support immigration because of my own  heritage and as one of America's greatest traditions.

THE AMERICAN FRIENDS SERVICE COMMITTEE http://www.afsc.org/
This admirable humanitarian organization based on the principles of the Religious Societyof Friends (Quakers) includes people of various faiths who work for peace and social justice. Founded during World War I, it gave conscientious objectors the opportunity to drive ambulances, help the wounded, and rebuild Europe after the war. Today, their actions focus on advocating reconciliation and non-violence.

THE SOCIETY of ST. ANDREW http://endhunger.org/
Ever wonder if there were a way to make sure food would not go to waste and would instead feed the hungry? The Society of St. Andrew fulfills that mission on a daily basis, gleaning excess produce from farmlands and providing nutritious meals to those in need. A true harvest of hope that operates across the United States, this ecumenical organization is dedicated to providing food for the body and love for the spirit.

MOROCCO & THE CASBAH DANCE EXPERIENCE http://www.casbahdance.org/
Preserving the rich cultural dance heritage of North Africa and the Near and Middle East, dancer Morocco (nee Carolina Varga Dinicu) has been an international figure for over 50 years. Her pioneering work in studying the roots of traditional dance forms and her magnificent performances and teaching have kept alive a vibrant artistic legacy in spite of ignorance and ethnic/religious persecution. I had the pleasure of studying under "Rocky" (as she is known) and can attest firsthand to her magnetic charisma and unwavering devotion to her art. She is a true living cultural treasure, and you can support her in her unique work through a tax-deductible donation to her non-profit organization, Morocco & The Casbah Dance Experience.
